Kneeboarding in Miami: What You Need To Know

With balmy weather, plentiful sunshine, sparkling beaches and perfect waves, it’s no wonder why marine sports in the South Beach area are incredibly popular. Kneeboarding in Miami takes fun in the water to a new level, combing the mechanics of waterskiing and surfing while getting you up close to South Florida’s beautiful waters. In this short guide, you’ll learn about this fun sport plus more about our kneeboarding classes in Miami.

From our instructors: ”We will prepare you for the excitement of water sports in no time”.

Fast-Action Fun on the Water

Kneeboarding is a little like wakeboarding, a marine sport that came into its own during the 1980s. However, kneeboarding first started to develop in the 1970s. Inspired by waterskiing techniques, it eventually emerged as its own type of towsport. Manufactured in the early 1970s, the first kneeboards were known as “Knee Skis.” By the middle of that decade, they were both popular and commercially available with names such as the Glide Slide, the Hydro Slide and the Tunnel Board.

Modern kneeboarding is exactly what it sounds like. You ride on a small board while kneeling and holding onto to a towline hooked up to a motorboat. Your kneeboard has straps that wrap around your thighs to keep you securely attached. Other important kneeboarding equipment includes a personal flotation device: Most choose lifejackets as they’re both easy to wear and effective.

Balance and form are important keys to successful kneeboarding. Both enable you to stay upright on your kneeboard and in the water so you can move as the boat advances forward. There’s even a technique to rising up on your kneeboard: Slow and steady movements are your best friends.

Don’t worry: We don’t expect you to learn all that just from this short guide. At Miami Wake Sports, we teach kneeboarding for beginners. Our instructors, Sasha and Renko, teach you basic techniques and safety practices while helping you unlock ways to fully enjoy this truly unique marine sport.

Our instructors come from strong marine sports backgrounds. As competitors and enthusiasts, they come with years of experience perfecting their methods and instructing others. Having watched kneeboarding, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and other marine activities evolve, they offer unique firsthand perspectives during our lessons and sessions.
