Wakeboarding blends techniques from three high-octane sports, bringing them together in unique ways that allow you to ride the water’s surface and perform tricks. Wakeboarding gets its name from the wakes produced by boats cutting through the water plus the boards that participants use to ride those waters.
When it first developed, this sport was originally dubbed “skurfing” as it was seen as a cross between skiing and surfing. It’s been around since the 1980s. Professional wakeboarding competitions have existed for a couple of decades, with the sport first becoming part of the World Games in 2005.

Wakeboarding for Beginners
Wakeboarding looks easy — and it truly is, once you learn some basic pointers. You’ll need a wakeboard, of course, plus a lifejacket. As you’ll probably spend more time physically in the water when first learning this sport, a wetsuit or rashguard is strongly recommended for protection.
One of the first things you’ll learn about wakeboarding is how to stand up on your board. You start in an almost squatting position with your knees bent and your arms straight, resting on your knees. Your body will almost be in a crunch-type position. When your board is lined up correctly behind the boat and your line set to a proper distance, the boat and the water do much of the work for you. All you need to do is stand up slowly.
