Wakesurfing in Miami: A Brief Guide

What’s better than a warm sunny afternoon spent with the wind in your hair as you skim the open water and ride the waves? That’s part of the allure of wakesurfing, one of the fastest-growing marine sports in the United States. Southern Florida is an excellent place to wakesurf, with plenty of water and awesome weather to catch and ride your waves. Keep reading to learn some basic facts about this sport plus how and where you can take wakeboarding lessons in Miami.

From our instructors: ”We will prepare you for the excitement of water sports in no time”.

A Quick Introduction to Wakesurfing

If you’re new to wakesurfing in Miami, you can benefit from a short overview of this popular marine sport. It originated from wakeboarding, a sport that’s very similar to waterskiing. Originally developed in Australia during the 1980s, wakeboarding involves participants riding on five-foot-long modified surfboards while holding onto a long cable with a handle.

There are a few notable differences between wakesurfing and other marine sports. While you ride behind a boat as you would in wakeboarding, you’re not being pulled by the boat itself. Unlike traditional surfing, you don’t have to stake your claim on a wave to ride it.

How Wakesurfing Works

Part of the allure of wakesurfing is its versatility. The motorboat behind which you ride creates wakes where it cuts through the water’s surface. These wakes generate waves similar to those in the ocean, except they’re smaller. Wakesurfers ride these smaller waves just as surfers ride larger ocean waves.

As the boat continuously travels on the water, it helps create a consistent curling effect with these waves. Wakeboards aren’t as dense as water and distribute a person’s weight over a wide area. Not only does this combination allow wakesurfers to ride their waves, but it also enables them to do spins and other cool tricks.
